Phase 3 goes live globally on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at 3:00 PM PDT — 6:00 PM EDT, 23:00 BST. Single global unlock, no staggered regional rollout.
That gives you two days.
Most of what actually blocks players on launch night is preparation they could have done weeks earlier on Phase 2 content. This checklist covers what to finish now, what genuinely cannot be finished until the gates open, and where people waste gold buying things they'll replace in week one.
A note on dates: some pages still list August 13. That came from an early Blizzard customer support post and is outdated. August 27 is the confirmed date.
What's In Phase 3
Two Tier 6 raids:
Black Temple — 9 bosses, ending on Illidan Stormrage, who drops the Warglaives of Azzinoth
The Battle for Mount Hyjal — 5 bosses, ending on Archimonde
Plus:
Netherwing daily faction and epic Netherdrake flying
Epic Gems
Tier 6 tokens, redeemed with Tydormu near the Hyjal entrance in the Caverns of Time
Two new raid reputations
Not in Phase 3: Zul'Aman. It isn't part of this release.
Level cap stays at 70. This is a new raid tier, not a new expansion.
Arena Season 3 starts separately in early September on regional weekly resets — not at the August 27 launch instant. Check your own region's schedule rather than treating one calendar date as global.
The Attunement Reality — What You Can and Cannot Finish
This is the single most important planning point in the whole checklist, and it catches guilds out every phase.
Mount Hyjal — Fully Completable Right Now
Hyjal attunement runs through The Vials of Eternity: defeat Lady Vashj in Serpentshrine Cavern and Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep, then turn in their quest items.
Both bosses are live on Phase 2. There is no reason to walk into August 27 without this done. If your guild is clearing SSC and TK, the attunement completes as a byproduct.
Black Temple — Cannot Be Finished Before Launch
The Black Temple chain has eight stages, and stage seven requires killing Rage Winterchill, the first boss of Mount Hyjal. Hyjal doesn't open until Phase 3.
What this means: you cannot be Black Temple attuned on launch day no matter how much you prepare. What you can do is arrive one boss away.
Everything up to and including Al'ar in Tempest Keep is doable now:
Shadowmoon Valley opening quests — Tablets of Baa'ri, Oronu the Elder, the four Ashtongue Corruptors, Warden's Cage
Zandras and the Sanoru turn-in
Seer Udalo in The Arcatraz
Ata'mal Terrace — needs five players
Fathom-Lord Karathress in Serpentshrine Cavern
Al'ar in Tempest Keep, wearing the Ashtongue Cowl
Get through stage six before Thursday and your launch-night sequence becomes: enter Hyjal, kill Rage Winterchill, run the final travel-and-roleplay steps, receive the Medallion of Karabor. That's one raid night instead of three weeks.
The Al'ar warning worth repeating: you must be wearing the Ashtongue Cowl when Al'ar dies. A battle rez removes it. If you get rezzed, re-equip immediately or you lose the credit and wait a full lockout. Dying and staying dead is fine — the disguise stays on your corpse.
Shadow Resistance — The Math Behind the Conflicting Numbers

You'll see 244, 174, and 134 quoted as the Shadow Resistance requirement for Mother Shahraz. Those numbers don't contradict each other — they're three steps in the same calculation.
244 total during the fight is the planning benchmark for non-tanks. At that level, Mother Shahraz's non-binary Shadow damage reaches the point where every hit takes at least a partial resist.
Subtract 70 for your raid's Shadow Resistance buff — a Priest's Prayer of Shadow Protection or a Paladin's Shadow Resistance Aura. These do not stack with each other, so you get 70 from one source, not 140 from both. That leaves 174.
Subtract 40 for the Medallion of Karabor, which you receive at the end of the Black Temple attunement. That leaves 134 needed from gear.
Tanks are exempt. Saber Lash splits between them, so main tank and off-tanks don't need a resistance set.
The Medallion Detail Most Players Miss
Attunements are account-bound on TBC Anniversary. The Medallion of Karabor is not.
Every character you intend to bring into Black Temple needs to complete the attunement personally — not for access, but for the necklace. Forty Shadow Resistance and a large chunk of Stamina, on a character who'd otherwise be 40 resistance short.
If you're planning to raid on an alt, factor that into your attunement work now.
What You Can't Craft Before Launch
Here's where preparation hits a hard wall.
The best Shadow Resistance gear is crafted from recipes sold by Okuno inside Black Temple, requiring Friendly or Honored with the Ashtongue Deathsworn. Every recipe needs Heart of Darkness, a rare crafting material found only inside the raid.
You cannot pre-craft the good set. It's gated behind being in the raid, farming reputation, and collecting a raid-only material.
What you can do before Thursday:
Night's End — a Tailor-crafted cloak worth +40 Shadow Resistance with relatively cheap materials. No raid access required.
Enchants — +15 Shadow Resistance on your cloak from a player enchanter, and +20 on your helmet if you're Honored with Lower City. If you're not Honored with Lower City yet, that's a two-day reputation push worth making.
Green and blue resistance pieces for cloak, bracers, rings, and helmet slots as a stopgap.
Start Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation — you open this faction during the Black Temple attunement chain at the Sanoru turn-in, which awards 250 reputation immediately.
Don't buy a resistance neck. The Medallion of Karabor from the attunement is your best-in-slot and it's free.
Don't overbuild. Mother Shahraz is the seventh boss. Most guilds will spend several raid nights on the earlier wings before reaching her, which gives you a window to collect proper gear from inside the raid. Build enough to be functional, not enough to be optimal — you're replacing it anyway.
Gold and Consumables

The expensive mistake is buying everything now.
Costs that repeat every raid night — flasks, food, potions, repairs. Buy these on a rolling basis, not in a giant pre-launch bulk purchase. Prices spike hardest in the days immediately before and after a phase launch.
Costs that only appear after a drop — gems, enchants, and armour kits for gear you haven't looted yet. There's no way to prepare these efficiently in advance. Hold gold in reserve instead.
Costs that depend on your guild's strategy — your Shadow Resistance set depends entirely on how your raid approaches Mother Shahraz. Confirm the raid's target number before spending.
What's genuinely worth pre-buying:
A working stock of flasks and food for the first two raid nights
Night's End materials if you're using it
Shadow Resistance enchant materials
Enough gold buffer for repairs during progression wipes
Two Tier 6 raids means fourteen bosses of learning, and progression repair bills are meaningfully higher than farm-content bills.
