WoW Forever is built around one idea its designers keep coming back to: the journey matters more than the destination. The leveling road from 1 to 60 isn't something to rush through on the way to endgame — it's meant to be the heart of the game.
That shows in how much of the open world has changed. New starting experiences, over 1,000 new quests, four new zones, new travel routes, a rebuilt riding system, and Camping as a social layer on top of all of it.
Here's everything confirmed about Forever's world ahead of launch on November 4.
When and Where Forever Takes Place
Forever is set a couple of years after Warcraft III, directly following the new Forsaken Kingdom campaign. It begins on the same day World of Warcraft originally launched in November 2004 — then diverges from there onto its own timeline.
In practice, this is "year one" Azeroth: before the Dark Portal reopened, before anyone sailed to Northrend. That's why Archimonde's skeleton still lies near Nordrassil on Mount Hyjal, and why the world's stories can grow in directions retail never took.
The Familiar World, Reworked
New Starting Experiences
Every starting zone has new NPCs, new quests, and new experiences. The original quests remain — the new content sits alongside them rather than replacing them.
For returning Classic players, this is the first sign that muscle memory won't carry you all the way. Even level 1 looks different.
Expanded Zones Where Quests Ran Thin
When deciding where to add quests, the design team looked for places where players had the fewest options. Many of those were zones in the 30 to 50 range — exactly where Classic leveling traditionally dried up and players turned to grinding mobs.
Desolace and the Wetlands have both received major quest additions to make them feel far less empty.
Mulgore gains a new plateau area overlooking Thunder Bluff.
The goal is also variety: with more paths through each bracket, a second character can take a genuinely different route than your first.
Four New Zones

Zone | Levels | What It Is |
|---|---|---|
Zephras Isle | 1–12 | Skyborne starting zone |
Riverglades | Mid-30s to early 40s | Large new leveling zone |
Shen'dralas | Not announced | Between Mulgore and Desolace |
Mount Hyjal | Endgame | Leveling endgame zone and home of both new raids |
Zephras Isle
The Skyborne homeland. Their story begins with an escape from Dire Maul, aided by the air elementals of Al'Akir. The zone covers levels 1 to 12, after which Skyborne players move on to their chosen faction's level 10–20 zones.
Riverglades
Forever's answer to the mid-30s leveling drought. The zone is home to Ogres and the Twilight's Hammer, and it includes Krol'dok Stronghold, an outdoor dungeon designed as a quest hub.
Its stories are deliberately small in scale — frontier communities, not world-ending threats — which leaves room for your own adventures to take focus. It also carries references to the original Warcraft, including a ruined town called Sunnyglade.
It connects to the rest of the world easily. Players can break off from Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace, or Arathi Highlands to head there, reaching it overland through Redridge via an entrance through the Burning Steppes, or by sea from Tanaris.
Shen'dralas
Set between Mulgore and Desolace, continuing the story of the Shen'dralar and the Centaur tribes of Desolace. It also adds quests that tie into Razorfen Downs and Maraudon, giving those dungeons more reasons to visit.
Mount Hyjal
Forever's endgame zone. It hosts both launch raids — Hyjal Summit for 20 players and Barrow Deeps for 10 — which means leveling here puts you right at your raid entrances when you hit 60.
Getting Around
New Ports

Three ports gain new or restored routes:
Port | Route |
|---|---|
Stormwind Harbor | Connects Stormwind with Auberdine and the Wetlands |
Southshore | Its dock finally has a purpose — a stop between Menethil Harbor and Auberdine |
Steamwheedle Port (Tanaris) | A ship across to Riverglades |
A note for Horde players: two of the three routes serve Alliance-side travel. The Horde's main gain is the neutral Steamwheedle Port route to Riverglades. No new zeppelin routes have been announced so far.
Riding: Pay for Training, Get Your First Mount Free
Forever reworks how mounts are paid for. The gold cost is now in the riding training itself, and your first mount is free.
100 gold for the first riding skill
1,000 gold for the faster one
The exact training levels haven't been announced. Classic used 40 and 60, which is the sensible assumption until confirmed.
Blizzard's reasoning is straightforward: an aspirational gold goal gives you something to work toward, and the economy needs gold sinks. Start saving through your 30s. The 40s and 50s are the longest and most spread-out stretch of leveling, and that's where a mount pays off most.
Controller Support
Forever has official controller support with a dedicated setup — a first for this kind of WoW release, and a meaningful accessibility option for players who can't or don't want to use a keyboard and mouse. There are no announced plans for a console version.
