Soul Splinters are the seasonal mechanic of Diablo 4 Season 15. They are socketable items for your amulet and rings that grant a resistance plus one powerful bonus, always paired with a drawback. There are eight Soul Splinters, each available in five rarities, and you can equip up to three at once.
The strongest Splinters on paper are Splinter of Hellfire for builds that do not rely on Critical Strikes, Splinter of Pain and Splinter of Sin for defense, and Splinter of Lies for farming. However, the right choice depends far more on your build than on the size of the bonus.
In this guide, the Mythic Store team goes beyond the tooltips. You will find simple math to decide whether a Splinter is worth it for your build, the combinations that work together and the ones that cancel each other out, and the known PTR issues confirmed by Blizzard. All values come from the 3.2.0 PTR and may change before launch.

How Soul Splinters Work

Sockets and Slots
Soul Splinters go into sockets on jewelry. With a socketed amulet and two socketed rings, you can equip three Splinters at the same time. The effects are the same in rings and amulets.
Rarities and Upgrades
Soul Splinters come in five rarities: Common, Magic, Rare, Legendary and Unique. Blizzard published four value steps, and on the PTR these matched the Magic through Unique versions. The role of Common Splinters has not been explained yet.
Higher rarities increase the bonus and the resistance, but in most cases the drawback stays exactly the same. Only two Splinters change their drawback with rarity:
Splinter of the Mother needs more enemy contacts before it Stuns you, from 100 at the lowest value to 250 at the highest.
Splinter of Damnation keeps its Monster Power increase active for longer, from 10 to 25 seconds.
You can upgrade lower-rarity Splinters in the Horadric Cube. The exact recipe and its cost will be confirmed with the live patch.
Duplicate Splinters Do Not Stack
Equipping two copies of the same Splinter does not double its effect. According to Blizzard's known issues list, the stronger of the two is supposed to apply. On the PTR, the game instead used whichever ring was equipped first, so avoid duplicates until this is confirmed as fixed.
All 8 Soul Splinters Explained
Values are listed from the lowest to the highest quality shown on the PTR.
Splinter of Anguish
Resistance: 250 / 1,750 / 2,625 / 4,375 Fire Resistance
Bonus: +15 / 20 / 25 / 35% Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed
Drawback: Primary Resource costs increased by 30%
Anguish is the most straightforward damage Splinter for Critical Strike builds. Up to 35% extra Critical Strike Chance can cap your Crit much earlier, and the Attack Speed makes every skill faster.
The catch is that faster attacks also mean spending resources faster, and every cast now costs 30% more. Before using Anguish, check that your build can sustain its main skill without running dry. Builds that rely on Basic skills, cooldowns or strong resource generation handle the penalty best.
Splinter of Sin
Resistance: 250 / 1,750 / 2,625 / 4,375 Lightning Resistance
Bonus: +10 / 20 / 30 / 40% multiplicative Maximum Life
Drawback: Maximum Primary Resource reduced by 30%
Sin is a pure defensive Splinter. Because the Life bonus is multiplicative, it scales with every other source of Maximum Life on your gear and Paragon, which makes it especially valuable in Hardcore.
The smaller resource pool is a minor issue for builds that spend small amounts often, but a serious one for builds that store a large pool and dump it at once or that scale their damage with Maximum Resource.
Splinter of Lies
Resistance: 250 / 1,750 / 2,625 / 4,375 Cold Resistance
Bonus: +40 / 60 / 80 / 100% Gold and Crafting Material drop rate, plus 25% bonus Experience
Drawback: You are always Weakened and Vulnerable
Lies is the farming Splinter. The Experience bonus stays at 25% on every quality, so even a low-rarity Lies is useful while leveling. Higher qualities only improve the Gold and material bonus.
Being permanently Weakened means you deal less damage, and being Vulnerable means you take more. That makes Lies a Splinter for content your build clears comfortably, not for pushing or bossing. Treat it as a swap-in piece for farming sessions rather than a permanent part of your setup.
Splinter of the Black Soulstone
Stats: +7 / 20 / 30 / 50 All Stats
Bonus: Killing an enemy absorbs its soul for 15 seconds. Each soul increases your damage by 2 / 3 / 4 / 5% multiplicatively
Drawback: Each soul increases your damage taken by 0.5%. The stacks do not refresh
A simple way to think about Black Soulstone is that your number of souls equals the number of enemies you killed in the last 15 seconds. At the highest quality, 20 active souls give you at least 100% more damage for 10% more damage taken.
This makes it excellent in dense farming content, where you kill constantly. Against a single boss, you stop gaining souls, the stacks expire one by one and the bonus fades. It is also the only Splinter that grants All Stats instead of a resistance, so it adds a little to your core stat as well.
Splinter of Pain
Resistance: 250 / 1,750 / 2,625 / 4,375 Poison Resistance
Bonus: +10 / 20 / 30 / 40% Damage Reduction
Drawback: Movement Speed reduced by 30%
Pain offers the largest direct defensive bonus of all Splinters. Up to 40% Damage Reduction is a major survivability increase for Pit pushing and difficult bosses.
The Movement Speed loss hurts most in speed farming and in fights that require dodging. Builds with strong mobility skills or plenty of Movement Speed on gear feel the penalty the least.
Splinter of the Mother
Resistance: 250 / 1,750 / 2,625 / 4,375 Physical Resistance
Bonus: You are Unhindered, and touching enemies makes them Vulnerable for 10 seconds
Drawback: After touching 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 enemies, you are Stunned for 4 seconds
Mother lets melee builds push through packs without being slowed and applies Vulnerable just by contact, which increases the damage those enemies take. For builds without another reliable source of Vulnerable, that alone is a large damage boost.
A four-second self-Stun is dangerous at high difficulty and potentially lethal in Hardcore. Higher qualities only delay the Stun, they never remove it. Mother is best in content where a short Stun is an inconvenience rather than a death sentence.
Splinter of Hellfire
Resistance: 35 / 250 / 375 / 625 Resistance to All Elements
Bonus: +40 / 60 / 80 / 100% multiplicative damage
Drawback: You lose 100% Critical Strike Chance
Hellfire is the most powerful damage Splinter for the right build, and the worst one for the wrong build. The easiest way to judge it is a quick calculation.
Your Critical Strikes add roughly 1 + (Critical Strike Chance × Critical Strike Damage bonus) to your average damage. The highest-quality Hellfire doubles your damage instead. If the product of your Crit Chance and Crit Damage bonus is below 1, Hellfire comes out ahead.
Example 1: 20% Crit Chance with a +100% Crit Damage bonus gives 1.2x from Crits. Hellfire's 2.0x is far better.
Example 2: 50% Crit Chance with a +200% Crit Damage bonus gives 2.0x. The two are equal.
Example 3: 70% Crit Chance with a +300% Crit Damage bonus gives 3.1x. Keep your Crits.
For lower-quality Hellfire, the break-even point is lower. At +40% damage, Hellfire only wins if your Crit product is below 0.4. Always check your build for effects that trigger on Critical Strikes as well, since they stop working completely with Hellfire.
A detail worth noting: Hellfire's resistance to all elements is roughly one-seventh of the single resistance on the other Splinters at every quality. Blizzard's announcement listed 50 for the second tier, but the PTR item showed 250, which fits that pattern.
Splinter of Damnation
Resistance: 250 / 1,750 / 2,625 / 4,375 Shadow Resistance
Effect: Killing an Elite pack increases Monster Power by 1 for 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 seconds
Damnation is the only Splinter without a direct power bonus. Monster Power is the same system that Profane Mindcages and several War Plan nodes raise: it makes enemies stronger and is generally used to make activities more rewarding. Blizzard has not specified what Damnation's Monster Power increase adds to your rewards, so its real value will only become clear on live servers.
For now, Damnation looks like a choice for strong farming builds that want denser, tougher fights and can handle sudden difficulty spikes after every Elite pack.
Soul Splinter Combinations: What Works and What to Avoid

With three slots, how your Splinters interact matters as much as each one on its own.
Combinations That Work
Splinter of Sin and Splinter of Pain. Multiplicative Life plus up to 40% Damage Reduction makes a very durable character. The drawbacks hit different stats, resource pool and Movement Speed, so they do not stack against each other.
Splinter of Lies and Splinter of the Black Soulstone for easy farming. In content you clearly outgear, Soulstone's kill-based damage makes up for Lies' Weakened status while Lies adds Gold, materials and Experience.
Splinter of the Mother and Splinter of Pain, pending confirmation. Blizzard listed as a known PTR issue that Movement Speed was still reduced when Mother was combined with another Splinter, despite Mother making you Unhindered. Pain is the only other Splinter that reduces Movement Speed, which suggests Mother may be intended to cancel Pain's slow. If that holds on live servers, this becomes a very strong defensive pairing for melee builds. Test it on day one.
Combinations to Avoid
Splinter of Hellfire and Splinter of Anguish. Hellfire removes all Critical Strike Chance, so Anguish's Critical Strike bonus is wasted. You keep only the Attack Speed and still pay 30% more for every skill.
Splinter of Anguish and Splinter of Sin. Higher costs and a smaller resource pool at the same time. Most builds cannot sustain both.
Splinter of Lies and Splinter of the Black Soulstone in hard content. Being Vulnerable while each soul also increases your damage taken compounds quickly. Keep this pairing for easy farming only.
Two copies of the same Splinter. They do not stack, and on the PTR the weaker one could apply.
Example Setups by Playstyle
These are starting points to test at launch, not a finished tier list. Your class and build will decide the final choice.
Playstyle | Suggested Splinters | Why |
|---|---|---|
Leveling | Lies plus two damage Splinters | 25% bonus Experience from any quality of Lies |
Speed farming | Lies, Black Soulstone, and Hellfire or Anguish | Constant kills feed Soulstone, Lies boosts rewards |
Pit pushing | Pain, Sin, and Hellfire or Anguish | Maximum survivability plus one damage Splinter |
Bossing | Hellfire or Anguish, Pain, Sin | Soulstone fades without kills, so drop it for bosses |
Hardcore | Sin, Pain, and one damage Splinter | Avoid Lies and Mother, whose drawbacks can be lethal |
Choose Hellfire or Anguish based on the Critical Strike calculation above. Never use both.
Known PTR Issues
Blizzard listed three Soul Splinter issues on the 3.2.0 PTR that it intends to address before release:
The Vulnerable status from Splinter of Lies was not applied while mounted.
Movement Speed was reduced despite Splinter of the Mother granting Unhindered when two specific Splinters were equipped.
When two rings contained the same Splinter type, the ring equipped first determined which effect applied, instead of the stronger one.
The community also reported inconsistent results when socketing Splinters into the new Legacy Unique Leoric's Crown, which counts as Jewelry. Until the live patch notes clarify it, do not plan your build around the Crown as an extra Splinter slot.
How to Get Soul Splinters
Blizzard has not announced where Soul Splinters drop on live servers. On the PTR, testers received them from a test vendor, which says nothing about the final acquisition method. The seasonal questline and the live patch notes should reveal the sources on launch day.
In the meantime, you can prepare in two ways:
Plan for sockets. Keep an eye out for rings and an amulet with sockets while leveling, so you can use Splinters as soon as you find them.
Keep spare Splinters. Since lower rarities can be upgraded in the Horadric Cube, do not salvage duplicates until you know what the upgrade recipe requires.
The Lore Behind the Soul Splinter Names
The names are not random. Several Splinters clearly reference the Great and Lesser Evils of Diablo lore, and their effects mirror the character of each one.
Splinter of Lies points to Belial, the Lord of Lies. It offers a tempting reward and hides a permanent weakness.
Splinter of Sin points to Azmodan, the Lord of Sin.
Splinter of Pain points to Duriel, the Lord of Pain.
Splinter of Anguish points to Andariel, the Maiden of Anguish.
Splinter of the Mother points to Lilith, whose promise of freedom ends in losing control, much like its Unhindered bonus ending in a Stun.
Splinter of the Black Soulstone references the artifact from Diablo III that was used to imprison the Evils, fittingly built around absorbing souls.
Soul Splinters FAQ
What are Soul Splinters in Diablo 4?
Soul Splinters are the seasonal socketables of Season 15. You socket them into jewelry, and each one grants a resistance and a strong bonus combined with a drawback.
How many Soul Splinters can you equip?
You can equip up to three Soul Splinters, one in your amulet and one in each ring, as long as each piece has a socket.
Can you stack two of the same Soul Splinter?
No. Two copies of the same Splinter do not stack, and only one effect applies. Blizzard intends the stronger one to take priority.
How do you upgrade Soul Splinters?
You upgrade Soul Splinters in the Horadric Cube. Blizzard has not published the exact recipe or costs yet.
Which Soul Splinter is the best?
There is no single best Splinter. Hellfire is the strongest damage option for builds that do not rely on Critical Strikes, Pain and Sin are the best defensive choices, and Lies is the best option for leveling and farming.
Are Soul Splinters permanent?
No. Blizzard introduced Soul Splinters as a seasonal feature of Season 15. Legacy Uniques and the Mythic crafting changes, by contrast, are permanent additions.
Is Splinter of Hellfire worth it?
It is worth it when the product of your Critical Strike Chance and Critical Strike Damage bonus is below 1 at the highest quality. For builds that rely on Critical Strikes or Crit-triggered effects, it is usually a loss.
