Patch 12.1.7 arrives between seasons, which puts a specific question in front of you: is any of this going to make your character stronger, or is it a content break?
Here's the honest sort, up front:
Feature | Affects Your Main's Power? |
|---|
Omnium Folio — two new runes, two new Motes | Yes — permanently, and expansion-wide |
Turbulent Timeways | Partly — a Heroic-level gear cache, plus a 30% XP buff for alts |
Talebound | No — separate characters, separate world, cosmetic rewards |
Story campaign and Lorewalking | No — story, and a mount |
One of those four is the reason to log in for your main, and it's the one every overview lists last. The rest is a genuinely good content break — Talebound in particular looks like the most interesting side mode WoW has shipped — but it isn't power.
This guide covers all of it, with the Omnium Folio section first, because that's the one with a deadline attached to how long you've had to benefit from it.
Release Date — The Honest Answer
Not confirmed. Blizzard has placed 12.1.7 in late autumn or early winter on the Midnight roadmap and hasn't announced a date.
The best community estimate is December 8, 2026, derived from the roadmap window and Blizzard's recent patch cadence. Early PTR testing began in October.
Treat December as likely and the exact day as a guess. We'll update this guide when the date is official.
Omnium Folio — The Only Real Power Upgrade

The Omnium Folio is Midnight's expansion-long power system, not a seasonal one. Everything you unlock in it carries forward through the rest of the expansion. That's what makes this section matter more than the rest of the patch combined.
12.1.7 adds two new runes and two more Motes of Omnial Inquiry.
Rune of Empowerment
Increases one of your stat runes by 20% — your choice of Rune of Critical Power, Burning Haste, Masterful Cunning, or Versatile Warrior.
A flat 20% multiplier on whichever stat rune you've already built around. There's no clever decision here beyond matching it to the stat rune you're running, which you've presumably already chosen based on your spec.
Rune of Critical Mass
Adds a chance-based effect whenever your Core Rune deals damage or healing. What it does depends on which Core Rune you're using:
With Rune of Void-Touched Orbs — calls down 3 Void orbs, damaging enemies or healing allies within 5 yards
With Rune of Unleashed Fire — blasts the area within 10 yards, splitting Fire damage among enemies or healing among allies
The practical difference is the radius and the distribution. Void-Touched Orbs at 5 yards is a tight effect — three discrete orbs, better for stacked targets or a clumped group. Unleashed Fire at 10 yards covers twice the area but splits its damage or healing among everyone in it, which means it rewards small groups and gets diluted in large ones.
Rough guidance: Unleashed Fire for single-target and small-pull content where the split lands on few targets. Void-Touched Orbs for stacked AoE where the 5-yard radius is enough and you want three separate instances rather than one divided one.
Test both on your spec before committing — the interaction with your own rotation matters more than any general rule.
Where to Go
The Omnium Folio content lives in the Lycaneum on the Isle of Quel'Danas, with Magister Umbric, Grand Magister Rommath, and Custodian Veldharin.
If you haven't finished the earlier Omnium Folio chain, do it. The traits are expansion-wide and still worth completing late — see our Patch 12.1 and Season 2 guide for the earlier stages.
Turbulent Timeways — Read the Mount Requirement Carefully

Turbulent Timeways returns for its sixth run, lasting eight weeks from patch launch.
This is where most coverage gets the requirement wrong, and it matters because getting it wrong costs you the mount.
The Mount: Markeet of the Infinite
Master of the Turbulent Timeways VI awards the Markeet of the Infinite Skyriding mount.
You'll see this described as "participate in four of the eight weeks." That's not the requirement. The requirement is to maintain Mastery of the Timeways for any four weeks of the event — and Mastery isn't something you get for showing up.
Here's the actual buff chain:
Complete one Timewalking dungeon → you gain Knowledge of the Timeways, a stacking 5% buff
Complete four Timewalking dungeons → it upgrades to Mastery of Timeways, granting +30% experience gain for the buff's duration
So Mastery requires four Timewalking dungeons, and the achievement requires holding Mastery across four separate weeks.
The real cost of that mount: 16 Timewalking dungeons, four per week, across four of the eight weeks.
That's entirely manageable — four dungeons a week is one evening — but it's four times what "participate in four weeks" implies. Plan the weeks you're going to do it rather than assuming you'll pick it up incidentally.
The +30% Experience Buff Is the Sleeper Feature
Mastery of Timeways grants +30% experience gain. If you have alts you've been meaning to level, the eight-week Timeways window is the cheapest time in the patch cycle to do it — you're running the dungeons for the mount anyway, and the buff rides along.
Stack this with rested experience and you're levelling considerably faster than you would at any other point in the season.
Heroic-Level Gear Cache
For a limited time, Archmage Aethas Sunreaver's Timewalking weekly quests reward a new Cache of Quel'Thalas Treasures at Heroic level.
This is the one piece of actual gear in the patch. "For a limited time" is doing real work in that sentence — if you want the cache, do the Timewalking weeklies early in the event rather than banking them for week seven.
Housing Decor
New decor items are added to the Timewalking vendors. If you're building out housing, the Timeways vendors are worth a visit with whatever Timewarped Badges you accumulate.
Talebound — What It Actually Is

Talebound is being compared to Remix and Plunderstorm, and that comparison sets the wrong expectation. Remix was about levelling characters you'd carry into retail. Plunderstorm was a battle royale.
Talebound is a co-op roguelike action RPG with three entirely new classes, played inside the retail client but set in its own world. It is closer to a standalone game than to a WoW event.
The Three Classes
All three can double jump, dodge, and guard — this is action-game movement, not WoW's tab-target combat. Each has its own talent tree.
Class | Playstyle |
|---|
Slayer | Melee and gun — a sword for eldritch foes and a gun when a blade isn't enough |
Inquisitor | Zealous light-based fighter who exposes evil hidden behind illusions |
Witch | Spell-focused: lightning, poison, spiders, moonlight, thorns and ravens |
These are not WoW classes with new names. They're built for the mode.
How a Run Works
You start from Quillgrave, a hub in the separate world of Darkhaven. Between runs you prepare with four NPCs, and understanding what each one does is the whole meta-game:
NPC | What They Sell |
|---|
Arcanist | Potions, draughts and flasks |
Scribe | Talents and abilities |
Outfitter | Improvements to health, damage, energy and focus |
Antiquarian | Passives that change how a tale can be approached |
Then you pick a Tale and run it — themed levels with enemies, bosses, puzzles, treasure, relics and rewards. Solo or with friends. Completing a tale returns you to Quillgrave with your rewards.
The Four Tales at Launch
Tale | Bosses |
|---|
Darkhaven | Kongrad von Sonnesheim, Alexandre Dozsenc |
Greenthistle Wood | Granny Greenthumb, Ylska Vilefang, Mobog |
Greywake's Expedition | Zzyg'th, Chathoa |
Grove of the Night Court | Tilywth, Maernok |
The Two Currencies — and Why the Difference Matters
This is the part that trips people up, because most coverage says "Talebound has a currency." It has two, and they do opposite jobs.
Ducats — collected during runs, converted into progression resources. This is your in-run and between-run power currency: it's what feeds the Arcanist, Scribe, Outfitter and Antiquarian. Ducats make your Talebound character stronger.
Bound Silver — Warband-bound, earned from quests, achievements and Tales of the Storyteller progress. Spent on cosmetics. This is what you actually take back to Midnight.
The practical read: Ducats are spent inside the mode to get better at the mode. Bound Silver is the reward you keep. If you're playing Talebound for the rewards rather than the gameplay, Bound Silver is the number to watch — and it comes from completing things, not from grinding runs.
Where to Spend Bound Silver
The Talebound store sells transmog sets, individual pieces and other cosmetics. You can reach it three ways:
The character-select access is a nice touch — you can browse and buy without loading into the mode.
What You Keep
Cosmetics for your Midnight account: mounts, transmog, and housing decor. Nothing that affects your main's power. Go in for the mode because it looks genuinely good, not because you're falling behind by skipping it.
Story Campaign — The Return to Dornogal
Xal'atath has breached the Worldcore. The only route to follow her is the Coreway in Dornogal, and it's damaged.
You return to Dornogal in Khaz Algar to reunite with Arator, Brinthe, Dagran and Brann, who help you find a way through.
This is a campaign continuation rather than a new zone — expect story, cinematics and the usual campaign reward structure rather than a fresh outdoor progression system.
Lorewalking
Apprentice Lorewalker Li Li Stormstout offers four storylines, available to characters level 10 and above:
The level 10 requirement is the detail worth noticing — these are accessible on any character, including fresh alts, which makes them a reasonable thing to do while you're levelling something with the Timeways XP buff running.
Winter Veil

A Winter Veil update is confirmed, with festive housing decor expected. Details haven't been published. Given the patch's December timing, the two will overlap.
What to Actually Do, and When
Before the patch:
Finish any outstanding Omnium Folio chapters. The traits are expansion-wide, so late completion still pays.
Clear your Timewarped Badge balance if you're sitting on a stack — new decor is coming to those vendors.
Patch week:
Unlock the two new Omnium Folio runes at the Lycaneum. This is the only thing in the patch that makes your character stronger, so it goes first.
Start the Timewalking weeklies for the Heroic Cache of Quel'Thalas Treasures — it's limited-time, so don't bank it.
Across the eight-week Timeways window:

FAQ
When does Patch 12.1.7 release? Not confirmed. Blizzard's roadmap places it in late autumn or early winter, and the best community estimate is around December 8, 2026. PTR testing started in October.
Does Patch 12.1.7 make my character stronger? Only through the Omnium Folio — two new runes (Rune of Empowerment and Rune of Critical Mass) and two more Motes of Omnial Inquiry. Those are permanent and expansion-wide. Everything else in the patch is cosmetics, story, or alt-levelling value.
Is Talebound played with my existing characters? No. You create a character from one of three new classes — Slayer, Inquisitor or Witch — in a separate world called Darkhaven. What comes back to your Midnight account is cosmetic: mounts, transmog and decor.
Can I play Talebound with friends? Yes. Tales can be run solo or in a group.
What's the difference between Ducats and Bound Silver? Ducats are collected during runs and convert into progression resources that make your Talebound character stronger. Bound Silver is Warband-bound, comes from quests, achievements and Tales of the Storyteller progress, and buys cosmetics you keep. Bound Silver is the reward currency; Ducats are the power currency inside the mode.
How do I get the Markeet of the Infinite mount? Maintain Mastery of the Timeways for any four weeks of the eight-week event. Mastery requires completing four Timewalking dungeons, so the real cost is 16 dungeons across four weeks — not simply logging in during four weeks.
What does Mastery of Timeways do? It grants +30% experience gain for its duration. It's the best alt-levelling window in the patch cycle, and you're earning it anyway while chasing the mount.
Is the Heroic Cache of Quel'Thalas Treasures permanent? No — it's described as available for a limited time from Archmage Aethas Sunreaver's Timewalking quests. Do those weeklies early in the event.
Which new Core Rune effect is better? Rune of Unleashed Fire covers 10 yards but splits its damage or healing among targets, so it's stronger on few targets. Rune of Void-Touched Orbs drops three separate orbs in 5 yards, so it's better on stacked groups. Test both against your own rotation.
Do I need to do Talebound to keep up? No. Nothing in it affects your character's power in Midnight.
The Short Version
Do first: unlock the two new Omnium Folio runes at the Lycaneum on the Isle of Quel'Danas. It's the only thing in 12.1.7 that makes your main stronger, and Omnium Folio progress lasts the whole expansion.
Do early: the Timewalking weeklies, for the limited-time Heroic Cache of Quel'Thalas Treasures.
Plan: 16 Timewalking dungeons — four per week across four of the eight Timeways weeks — for the Markeet of the Infinite. Level alts while the +30% XP buff is up.
Do for fun: Talebound. Three new action-RPG classes, four tales, co-op, and a cosmetics-only reward track. Nothing in it is a treadmill you're behind on.
