The Matrix Catalyst converts ordinary gear into tier set pieces. One charge, one conversion, and charges arrive once every two weeks.
That schedule looks restrictive, and for most of the season it is. But there's a threshold that changes the system completely: once you have your 4-piece set bonus, Catalyst charges stop being time-gated and start dropping from content.
That single fact should drive every charge decision you make. This guide covers how the system works, the full charge schedule, and the spending order that gets you to that threshold fastest.

Conversion Rules
Your item must meet all four conditions:
Veteran-track or higher. Adventurer gear won't convert.
Not already a tier piece. You can't reroll a tier item into a different slot.
Not crafted. Profession gear is excluded entirely.
You need at least one charge.
The converted piece keeps its item level. Converting a 305 Hero-track item gives you a 305 tier piece. Converting a 279 item gives you a 279 tier piece.
This matters more than it sounds: always convert your highest item level eligible piece. A charge spent on a low-item-level item produces a low-item-level tier piece, and you can't upgrade the conversion afterwards without spending crests you'd have spent anyway.
Item Level of Armor | Tier Set Appearance |
279 - 289 | Raid Finder |
292 - 302 | Normal |
305 - 315 | Heroic |
318+ | Mythic |
The Slot Mistake That Wastes Charges

Nine slots can be converted. Only five give set bonuses.
These count toward your 2-piece and 4-piece:
Helm
Shoulders
Chest
Hands
Legs
These are cosmetic only:
The interface will happily let you convert a belt. It will look correct. It will contribute nothing to your set bonus.
Never spend a charge on a cosmetic slot until your 4-piece is complete. Charges are the scarcest gearing resource in the season for most players, and this is the single most common way they're wasted.
The Charge Schedule
Your first charge comes from the Taste True Power intro quest. After that, one every two weeks.
Charge | NA | EU |
|---|
1 | Aug 18 | Aug 19 |
2 | Sep 1 | Sep 2 |
3 | Sep 15 | Sep 16 |
4 | Sep 29 | Sep 30 |
5 | Oct 13 | Oct 14 |
6 | Oct 27 | Oct 28 |
Four charges by the end of September. If you're relying on the passive schedule alone, that's your realistic budget for the first six weeks of the season.
The Threshold That Changes Everything
Two achievements sit between you and unlimited charges, and they chain.
Grants a bonus charge. You need any one of the following:
Reach 2,000 Mythic+ rating
Reach 1,600 rated PvP rating
Defeat Ula'tek on Heroic or Mythic
Three different routes, and you only need one. For most players the Mythic+ rating is the accessible option, but a Heroic Ula'tek kill gets there faster if your guild is clearing the raid.
Earned automatically once that character has its 4-piece Season 2 set.
From that point, Venomblight Manaflux can drop from:
Mythic+ dungeons
Venomous Abyss raid bosses
Bountiful Delves
Rated Arenas and Battlegrounds
Catalyst conversions themselves
These are additional drops on top of your biweekly charge, not a replacement for it.
Why This Is the Whole Strategy
Read those two steps together and the shape of the season becomes obvious:
Every charge you spend before reaching 4-piece is an investment in escaping the time gate. Every charge after is convenience.
That produces a clear rule: spend charges on whichever of the five core slots gets you to 4-piece fastest, and don't spend them on anything else until you're there.
Holding a charge "for a better item later" is usually wrong before 4-piece. The two weeks you spend waiting are two weeks you're not accumulating Manaflux from content.
Which Slot to Convert
Once you know you're converting a core slot, pick which one with this order:
1. The slot you're least likely to receive from the raid. The five Season 2 tier bosses are Entombed Sentinels (hands), The Lost Explorers (shoulders), Vashnik the Malignant (chest), Sszorak (legs), and The Twin Fangs (helm). If your guild is stalled before The Twin Fangs, your helm token isn't coming — convert a helm.
2. The slot where your best non-tier item level sits. The conversion keeps the item level, so this maximises what you get for the charge.
3. The slot you have duplicates in. If Mythic+ has given you three usable chest pieces and nothing for legs, converting a chest costs you nothing you're actually wearing.
Never convert a slot where you already have tier. It doesn't upgrade anything and the charge is gone.
Raiders and Non-Raiders Have Different Answers
If you're clearing the raid: the Catalyst is a gap-filler, not your primary tier source. The tier bosses drop tokens directly, and Ula'tek drops a universal Curio you redeem for whichever slot you're missing — hand it in at Kirana, standing beside the Catalyst in Silvermoon.
Your approach: don't burn charges early on slots the raid is likely to give you. Wait a few resets, see where RNG leaves you, then convert the stubborn slot. You'll reach 4-piece regardless, and you'll bank charges for later.
If you're not raiding: the Catalyst is your only realistic tier source, and Bountiful Delves plus Mythic+ won't hand you set pieces.
Your approach: convert immediately, every charge, into core slots. Four charges takes you to 4-piece around the end of September if you start on day one. Add the Serpent Scion bonus charge — Mythic+ rating is the achievable route for most solo players — and you're there sooner.
This is also where the Serpent Scion achievement matters most. For a raider it's a nice extra. For a non-raider it's meaningfully accelerating the only tier path available.
When to Hold a Charge
There are only two situations where waiting is correct:
You're at 3 of 4 pieces and expect the fourth from a raid token this week. Wait one reset. If it doesn't drop, convert. You risk two weeks; you save a charge.
Your best eligible item in that slot is about to improve substantially. If you're one Great Vault away from a Myth-track chest and you'd otherwise convert a Champion-track one, waiting a week produces a meaningfully better tier piece.
Outside those two cases, spend the charge. A charge sitting unused does nothing, and the sooner you hit 4-piece the sooner charges start dropping from content.
Common Mistakes
Converting bracers, belts, cloaks, or boots before 4-piece. They're cosmetic. No set bonus. The interface won't stop you.
Converting a low item level piece. The conversion preserves item level. Always use your best eligible item in that slot.
Hoarding charges early. Before 4-piece, charges are the bottleneck on unlocking unlimited charges. Sitting on them delays the thing that fixes the problem.
Ignoring Serpent Scion. Three separate routes, only one required. A Heroic Ula'tek kill, 2,000 Mythic+ rating, or 1,600 PvP rating all work — most players will clear one of these naturally by mid-season without targeting it.
Trying to convert crafted gear. It won't work. Crafted pieces are excluded regardless of item level or track.
The Short Version
Complete Taste True Power from Eldara Dawnrunner in Silvermoon for your first charge.
Convert only Helm, Shoulders, Chest, Hands, or Legs until you have 4-piece.
Always convert your highest item level eligible piece.
Earn Serpent Scion — Mythic+ rating, PvP rating, or a Heroic Ula'tek kill — for a bonus charge.
Reach 4-piece to unlock Catalyst Unbound, after which Venomblight Manaflux drops from Mythic+, raid, Delves, and rated PvP.
Once you're past 4-piece, convert cosmetic slots freely.
