Nymrissa Wavecaller is the Lair boss of the Tidebound Grotto on the Coiled Isle, and she's more important than a single-boss encounter usually is.
She's the only boss in Midnight Season 2 offering Flexible Mythic difficulty, and she counts toward the Raid row of your Great Vault. That makes her the fastest raid-row Vault credit available to a solo or small-group player in the entire season.
This guide covers the full strategy — including the two mechanics Wowhead's journal dump doesn't explain — plus loot, difficulty scaling, and the Vault math.

How to Queue

Queuing works like Delves, which trips up players expecting a standard raid finder.
Solo players can only queue into World Difficulty. You're placed into the instance while other players join, clearing trash and elites until enough people are present for the boss to spawn. Up to 40 players can join.
Premade groups access Normal, Heroic, and Mythic. The group leader must enter first — the rest of the group can only enter after the leader is inside. This catches people out constantly on the first attempt.
The Fight: One Cycling Phase

Nymrissa has a single mechanics phase that repeats until she dies. No transitions, no intermissions. Learn the cycle once and you know the whole fight.
The Bubble Cycle — The Core Loop
Alluring Bubble spawns — a large water bubble forms in the grotto
Bubblefin Shorerunners swarm toward it, drawn by the bubble
Murlocs that reach the bubble become Bubblefin Berserkers — these pulse heavy raid-wide Frost damage every 3 seconds
Swirling Whirlpools surge across the grotto toward the bubble, damaging anyone in their path
The bubble Pops! — raid-wide burst damage plus a knockback
Your job: kill the Shorerunners before they reach the bubble. Every murloc that gets in becomes a Berserker, and Berserkers stack raid damage that your healers will feel immediately.
This is the DPS check of the fight. Not the boss's health bar — the murloc intercept.
Positioning note: the Pop! knockback is predictable. Don't stand somewhere that a knockback would throw you into a whirlpool path or off the platform.
Frost Orbs — The Mechanic That Inverts by Difficulty
This is the part the journal dump doesn't clarify, and it's where most groups wipe.
Chilling Frost hits players for Frost damage and slows movement. Each hit leaves a Frost Orb at the player's location. Frost Orbs leave Lingering Frost on the ground — persistent damage that also makes players slide.
Here's where difficulty changes everything:
Difficulty | Frost Orb Behaviour | How to Handle |
|---|---|---|
Normal | Orbs cling when touched, stacking damage | Avoid casually; not a wipe mechanic |
Heroic | Orbs Shatter if left untouched — 525k Frost damage to everyone, plus a 30-second DoT that stacks | You must touch the orbs. Leaving them alone kills the raid. |
Mythic | Untouched orbs still Shatter. Touched orbs trigger Frost Burst — 216k to all players | Still touch them — but spread out. 216k is survivable; 525k stacking is not. |
The takeaway: on Heroic and Mythic, Frost Orbs are a mandatory soak, not something to dodge. Assign players to pick them up, and spread the assignment across the raid so no one accumulates too many stacks.
The stacking part matters: touching an orb increases your damage taken from Frost Orbs by 15% for 16 seconds, and it stacks. Rotate who takes them.
Water Jet — The Tank Mechanic Everyone Misreads
Water Jet is Nymrissa's sustained tank damage — high-pressure water that pushes the tank back and increases Water Jet damage taken by 20% per hit, stacking.
But it also washes away Lingering Frost.
That's not flavour text. It's a tool. The tank can position Nymrissa so that Water Jet clears Lingering Frost patches off the ground where the raid needs to stand. On Mythic specifically, Water Jet removing Lingering Frost is the primary cleanup mechanism for a floor that gets progressively more hostile.
Tank strategy:
Watch where Lingering Frost is accumulating
Angle the boss so Water Jet sweeps those patches
Manage your own stacks — the 20% increase compounds fast if you're never dropping the debuff
Iceblade Flurry (Normal and Heroic) is a second sustained tank damage source with no positional utility. Straightforward tank cooldown usage.
Abyssal Rain — The Soft Enrage on Heroic
Abyssal Rain channels raid-wide Frost damage with a lingering drench DoT. Healers should pre-cooldown for it.
On Heroic and above, Abyssal Rain grants Nymrissa "Wavecaller's Might" — +5% Frost damage, stacking.
This is a soft enrage. Every Abyssal Rain cast makes every future mechanic hit harder. A slow kill isn't just a long fight — it's an escalating one. If your group is struggling on Heroic, the answer is usually more DPS uptime rather than more healing.
Mythic-Only: Bubblefin Frostscale
On Mythic, a new add type appears: Bubblefin Frostscale, a deepwater murloc that casts Waterfog Shield — reducing damage taken by nearby murlocs by 99%.
This is a priority kill, full stop. If a Frostscale is up, your AoE on the Shorerunners does essentially nothing, they all reach the bubble, and you get a full wave of Berserkers pulsing raid damage.
Mythic add priority:
Bubblefin Frostscale (breaks the shield)
Bubblefin Shorerunners (before they reach the bubble)
Bubblefin Berserkers (already empowered — damage control)
Unending Tides — The Hard Enrage
Unending Tides is the fight's enrage: repeated catastrophic Frost damage to everyone until the raid dies. There's no mechanic to play around. If you see it, your kill was too slow.
Combined with Wavecaller's Might stacking on Heroic, the effective enrage window is shorter than the timer suggests.
Role Cheat Sheet
Tanks:
Angle Water Jet to clear Lingering Frost from raid positioning
Manage Water Jet stacks — drop the debuff when possible
Standard cooldown rotation for Iceblade Flurry
Healers:
Pre-cooldown Abyssal Rain — it's the biggest predictable raid damage window
Watch Berserker count; each one adds a 3-second Frost pulse to raid damage
Frost Orb soaks are damage you have to plan for, not avoid
DPS:
Kill Shorerunners before they reach the bubble. This is your primary job.
Mythic: Frostscale first, always
Soak Frost Orbs on Heroic and Mythic — rotate the assignment
Don't stand in whirlpool paths

The item levels look modest next to Venomous Abyss. That's not the point.
Nymrissa counts toward the Raid row of your Great Vault. For players who can't commit to a full raid schedule, this is a raid-row Vault slot from a single boss kill in a queueable instance.
The practical value by player type:
Solo players: World difficulty gives you a raid-row Vault credit with no group required. That's a slot you'd otherwise have no access to.
Small groups: Heroic Nymrissa gives Hero 1/6 gear plus Hero Mistcrests plus a raid-row Vault credit — a full raid-tier reward package from one boss.
Mythic raiders: Flexible Mythic scales from 25 players down, so you don't need a full roster. It's the cheapest Myth 1/6 gear and Myth Mistcrest source in the game per unit of time invested.
Alts: the fastest way to give an alt raid-row Vault progress without dragging them through Venomous Abyss.
