The Great Vault is the single most valuable weekly reward in the game, and it's also the system players misunderstand most.
Three rows. Up to nine items generated. You pick exactly one.
This guide covers how each row actually calculates your item level, the season-long raid mechanic that isn't in most guides, why your third world slot is stuck at Tier 1 no matter how many Delves you run, and what to take when none of the nine items are upgrades.
The Basics
Location | Bank, neutral sector of Silvermoon City |
Coordinates |
|
Vaultkeeper | Vaultkeeper Elysa — neutral vault only |
Rows | Raid, Dungeons, World |
Max slots | 9 (three per row) |
Items you keep | One |
The Horde-sector vault has no attendant. If you want to trade for currency or a bonus roll, use the neutral one.
Check it from anywhere: Adventure Guide (J) → Journeys tab → small Great Vault button in the top right. You can view progress remotely, but you still have to physically visit the vault to open it and pick.
Row Requirements

Row | Slot 1 | Slot 2 | Slot 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
Raid | 2 bosses | 4 bosses | 6 bosses |
Dungeons | 1 dungeon | 4 dungeons | 8 dungeons |
World | 2 activities | 4 activities | 8 activities |
Every slot can roll a tier piece. This includes dungeon and world slots — you do not need to raid to get tier gear from your vault. Most players don't know this and skip the vault entirely on non-raid weeks.
Rewards unlock on the following reset. Complete objectives this week, choose next week.
The Raid Row
Lairs count toward the Raid row. Nymrissa Wavecaller in the Tidebound Grotto fills raid progress, which makes it the cheapest raid credit available — queueable solo on World difficulty.
Item level is set by the highest difficulty at which you completed each threshold. If you cleared 8/8 Normal but only 5/8 Heroic, your first two slots are Heroic quality and your third drops to Normal — because you didn't kill six Heroic bosses.
Raid Vault Item Levels
Difficulty Completed | Vault Reward |
|---|---|
Raid Finder | 292 · Champion 1/6 |
Normal | 305 · Hero 1/6 |
Heroic | 318 · Myth 1/6 |
Mythic | 335 · Mythic 6/6 |
Mythic (final two bosses / Very Rare) | 344 · Mythic 9/6 |
Vault rewards come from the loot table one difficulty above what you cleared. Heroic clears produce Myth-track gear. This is why Heroic raiding stays relevant for the entire season even in Mythic-progression guilds.
Your Raid Loot Pool Stays Open All Season
This is the mechanic that changes how you plan progression, and it isn't obvious from the UI.
Once you've killed a boss at a given difficulty, that boss's loot table stays unlocked for you at that difficulty for the rest of the season. It doesn't reset weekly.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
You kill boss 8 on Mythic in week 4.
In week 9 you only kill bosses 1 and 2 on Mythic, unlocking a single raid slot.
That slot can still roll loot from boss 8 — and from every boss before it.
Why this matters: if there's a specific trinket or weapon sitting on a late boss, you don't need to reach that boss every single week. Kill it once at your target difficulty, then fill the raid row with whatever's convenient. Your loot pool stays wide.
The same logic applies to killing bosses out of order. Join a group already in progress and kill boss 4 without killing 1 through 3, and your pool draws from all four.
Practical takeaway: early in progression, prioritise reaching the deepest boss you can at your best difficulty at least once. After that, filling raid slots becomes far more flexible.
The Dungeon Row
Heroic, Mythic 0, Mythic+, and Timewalking all count. Timewalking counts as Heroic.
Your three slots are set by your 1st, 4th, and 8th highest keys of the week. The order you run them in is irrelevant — the game sorts them for you.
Worked example. You run: +9, +9, +9, +7, +7, +5, +5, +5, +5, +4, +4.
Slot | Based On | Result |
|---|---|---|
1 | Highest key (+9) | +9 reward level |
2 | 4th highest (+7) | +7 reward level |
3 | 8th highest (+5) | +5 reward level |
To improve from there: three more keys at +6 or above raise your third slot, one at +8 or above raises your second, anything above +9 raises your first.
There's a useful consequence here. Once you've locked in eight keys, running additional low keys costs you nothing. Spam +2s to help friends and your earned item levels stay untouched.
Mythic+ Vault Item Levels
Key Level | End of Dungeon | Crest | Vault / Bonus Roll |
|---|---|---|---|
+2–3 | 295 · Champion 2/6 | Champion Mistcrest | 305 · Hero 1/6 |
+4 | 298 · Champion 3/6 | Hero Mistcrest | 308 · Hero 2/6 |
+5 | 302 · Champion 4/6 | Hero Mistcrest | 308 · Hero 2/6 |
+6 | 305 · Hero 1/6 | Hero Mistcrest | 311 · Hero 3/6 |
+7 | 305 · Hero 1/6 | Hero Mistcrest | 315 · Hero 4/6 |
+8 | 308 · Hero 2/6 | Hero Mistcrest | 315 · Hero 4/6 |
+9 | 308 · Hero 2/6 | Myth Mistcrest | 315 · Hero 4/6 |
+10 | 311 · Hero 3/6 | Myth Mistcrest | 318 · Myth 1/6 |
+11 | 311 · Hero 3/6 | Myth Mistcrest | 318 · Myth 1/6 |
+12+ | 311 · Hero 3/6 | Myth Mistcrest | 318 · Myth 1/6 |
Two breakpoints are worth committing to memory:
+9 — Myth Mistcrests start here, not +10. If you're chasing crest currency and +10s are unreliable for your group, +9 delivers the same crest on a gentler timer.
+10 — the vault jumps to Myth 1/6 and stops improving. End-of-dungeon loot also caps at 311 from +10 onward. A +15 gives identical loot to a +10. Above +10 you're farming rating, not gear.
The World Row — Why Your Third Slot Is Stuck at Tier 1
This is the most common Great Vault frustration, and the cause isn't obvious from the interface.
The world row uses the same 1st / 4th / 8th highest logic as dungeons. And here's the catch:
Zone Events, Weekly Quests, and Assignments all count at Tier 1 Delve level.
So if your week looks like three Special Assignments, two Zone Events, then three Tier 8 Delves — your 8th highest activity is a Tier 1-equivalent weekly quest. Your third slot displays Tier 1, and running one more T8 Delve won't move it.
The fix: you need eight actual high-tier Delves or Prey hunts, not eight world activities of any kind. Weeklies and assignments fill the count but drag down the item level of your later slots.
World Row Item Levels
Delve Tier | Item Level |
|---|---|
Tier 1 | 279 |
Tier 2 | 282 |
Tier 3 | 285 |
Tier 4 | 289 |
Tier 5 | 292 |
Tier 6 | 298 |
Tier 7 | 302 |
Tier 8+ | 305 |
Prey hunts scale across Normal, Hard, and Nightmare and feed the same row. Normal Prey sits at Tier 1 Delve level.
What Counts and What Doesn't
Counts: Delves, Prey hunts, Zone Events, Weekly Quests, Assignments.
Doesn't count: world bosses and collection-style weekly quests. They feel like world content but never register toward the row.
