Patch 12.1 is live as of August 11. Season 2 starts August 18.
That one-week gap matters. The patch opened the Coiled Isle, the Altar of Fangs dungeon at Heroic and Mythic 0, and the continuation of the campaign. Season 2 — Mythic+ keys, the Venomous Abyss raid at Mythic difficulty, rated PvP, Bountiful Delves — all of that unlocks on August 18.
This guide covers everything new: what's available now, what opens next week, the full Season 2 dungeon pool with difficulty breakdown, the new raid, new currencies, new content systems, and what to prioritise in week one.
Timeline: Patch Week vs. Season Week
Date | What Opens |
|---|---|
August 11 (Now) | Coiled Isle zone, campaign Chapter 2, Altar of Fangs (Heroic + Mythic 0 weekly reset), Lairs, Cursed Fishing, Vaults of Atal'Utek, Housing updates |
August 18 (Season 2) | Mythic+ keys, Venomous Abyss raid (Normal/Heroic/Mythic + LFR Wing 1), Tidebound Grotto Lair, rated PvP Season 2, Bountiful Delves, Nightmare Prey, new Mistcrest currency |
If you're trying to push a Mythic+ key right now on August 11: keys aren't available until August 18. Run Altar of Fangs on Heroic and Mythic 0 to learn the dungeon and start gearing — Mythic 0 drops ilvl 292 gear on a weekly lockout this week, switching to daily reset when Season 2 begins.
What's New: The Coiled Isle
The central new zone of Patch 12.1 is the Coiled Isle — a serpent-themed landmass off the eastern coast of Zul'Aman, built as a repeatable max-level hub rather than a one-time campaign map.
What's on the island:
Zul'jarra's Forces Renown — the new seasonal faction. Reputation is earned through world quests, activities, and outdoor content on the island. Renown unlocks new collectables and — importantly — several major new profession recipes. If crafting is your priority, renown progression feeds your profession system directly.
Vaults of Atal'Utek — the new repeatable world activity. You collect corrosive power inside the Vaults and use it to push back the Children of Ula'tek. Think Zaralek Cavern Sniffenseeking or Forbidden Reach Zskera Vaults in structure — instanced exploration with meaningful rewards.
Cursed Surges + Cursed Fishing — rotating world events that unlock rare enemies around the island when active. Cursed Fishing connects to Captain Tokka's crew questline with its own reward track.
Lairs — a new scalable world boss system. Lairs range from Normal to Flexible Mythic difficulty and provide outdoor progression for players across all skill levels. The Tidebound Grotto Lair is the season's major entry, launching at Heroic difficulty this week and opening Mythic on August 18.
Season 2 Mythic+ Dungeon Pool — All 8 Dungeons

This is the most significant structural change in Season 2: the entire Season 1 dungeon pool is retired. Windrunner Spire, Magisters' Terrace, Maisara Caverns, Nexus-Point Xenas — none of them carry over. Eight new dungeons replace them completely.
New Dungeons (Midnight Original, unused in Season 1):
Murder Row One of the four Midnight dungeons held back from Season 1 finally enters the rotation. Set in the darker underbelly of Silvermoon's infamous district. Expect encounters built around sin'dorei rogue and assassin archetypes.
Den of Nalorakk Forest troll dungeon themed around the Amani warlord Nalorakk. AoE-heavy trash packs in a confined dungeon layout. Players who ran Zul'Aman in TBC will recognise the visual identity.
The Blinding Vale Void-corrupted zone dungeon. Magic damage spikes throughout — healers with strong sustained throughput handle this more cleanly than burst-only compositions.
Voidscar Arena Combat-arena format dungeon. Expect wave-based encounters and limited movement space compared to corridor-style dungeons.
Brand New Dungeon (Patch 12.1):
Altar of Fangs (3 bosses: Rav'i → The Writhing Coil → Zul'jan) The only completely new dungeon in the Season 2 pool, located on the Coiled Isle. Three bosses along a linear path through the Carnage Pit exterior, Mutation Chambers, and up to the Altar itself for the Zul'jan encounter. Available now on Heroic and Mythic 0. Mythic+ opens August 18.
Completing Altar of Fangs at +10 or higher within the timer earns Keystone Hero: Altar of Fangs and the dungeon's teleport unlock — a functional milestone, not just a cosmetic one.
Returning Dungeons:
King's Rest (Battle for Azeroth) Zandalari king's tomb dungeon. Tight timer, complex trash routing. Returns from BfA with updated M+ tuning. Historically one of the more demanding dungeons to pug at high key levels.
Ruby Life Pools (Dragonflight) The "approachable" dungeon of the rotation. Dracthyr and dragon egg mechanics. Generous timer at most key levels — a reliable early score dungeon for the majority of players.
Temple of Sethraliss (Battle for Azeroth) Naga temple. Has received multiple PTR tuning passes before launch, which is either reassuring or a warning depending on your read of Blizzard's process. Lightning-damage profile — bring interrupts or the trash will hurt more than it should.
Preliminary Difficulty Ranking (Season 2 Opening Week)
Based on PTR feedback and historical dungeon performance data:
Tier | Dungeons |
|---|---|
Easiest (build rating here first) | Ruby Life Pools, Altar of Fangs, Den of Nalorakk |
Mid (run after establishing early scores) | Murder Row, Voidscar Arena, The Blinding Vale |
Hardest (push last) | King's Rest, Temple of Sethraliss |
Note: This ranking reflects opening week expectations. Tuning patches will shift positions — check current data after the first week of keys.
The Venomous Abyss — Season 2 Raid Guide Overview
8 bosses. Opens August 18. The raid is set inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek and ends with Ula'tek herself — a five-headed snake goddess imprisoned for 16,000 years, released by Zul'jan. She was not particularly grateful about it.
Boss Highlights:
Twin Fangs — two-boss, two-phase encounter requiring debuff management, a group soak, and an add that scales in power based on how many debuffs were removed. Coordination-dependent. Groups that ignore debuffs will feel it in phase two.
The Coiled Altar — three-phase fight with an intermission burn phase between phases 2 and 3. Phase 3 combines both previous phases simultaneously — premium on positioning discipline and healer mana management. One of the most mechanically dense encounters in the raid.
Ula'tek (Final Boss) — not tested on PTR. Blizzard maintained the tradition of hiding the final boss until live. Model is confirmed impressive. Mechanics are confirmed unknown. Plan accordingly.
Tier Sets:
All 13 classes receive new tier sets in Season 2 with four recolor variants tied to difficulty: LFR, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic. The Midnight Catalyst converts eligible non-tier gear into tier pieces — useful for players who clear Heroic for vault slots but don't commit to a full Mythic schedule.
Thematically: serpent and troll imagery throughout. Hunters receive the most overtly snake-themed armor in the pool. Paladins receive golden plate wreathed in holy fire, maintaining their perfect record of ignoring thematic consistency.
Raid Availability Schedule:
Difficulty | Opens |
|---|---|
Normal + Heroic | August 18 |
LFR Wing 1 | August 18 |
Mythic | August 18 |
LFR Wings 2–4 | Subsequent weeks |
Week-one Heroic Venomous Abyss is the highest-value activity in Season 2 opening week. A Heroic full clear feeds Myth-track vault slots for the following Tuesday — the fastest path to Myth-track gear outside of Mythic raiding itself.
