Season 2 reset the ladder. Every item level jumped roughly 39 points over Season 1, five upgrade tracks returned with a new currency, and the ceiling now sits around ilvl 344 at the very top.
If you're starting from a Season 1 main, a fresh 90, or an alt you ignored for four months, the path to raid-ready is different for each — but the sequence of decisions is the same. Here it is, in order.
The Short Answer
Your Situation | Fastest Path | Time to Raid-Ready |
|---|---|---|
Season 1 main (ilvl 280+) | M+ 2–4 → Heroic raid → M+10 | 1 week |
Fresh 90 / neglected alt | Catch-up gear → Heroic dungeons → Delves → M+ | 2–3 weeks |
Returning after months off | Campaign + Field Accolade catch-up → Delves → M+ | 2–3 weeks |
Already Heroic-geared | M+10 + Heroic Vault + Mistcrest cap | Ongoing optimisation |
The universal rule for Season 2: the Great Vault is worth more than everything you loot during the week. Optimise your week around Vault eligibility first, direct drops second.
Item Level Chart — Where Every Piece Comes From
Source | Direct Drop | Track | Great Vault Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
Heroic dungeons | ~286 | Champion | — |
Mythic 0 (Altar of Fangs) | 292 | Champion 1/6 | — |
M+2–3 | 295 | Champion 2/6 | 305 (Hero 1/6) |
M+4–5 | 298–302 | Champion 3–4/6 | 308 (Hero 2/6) |
M+6–7 | 305 | Hero 1/6 | 311–315 (Hero 3–4/6) |
M+8–9 | 308 | Hero 2/6 | 315 (Hero 4/6) |
M+10+ | 311 | Hero 3/6 | 318 (Myth 1/6) |
Raid Finder | ~279 | Veteran | Champion 1/6 |
Normal raid | ~292 | Champion | Hero 1/6 |
Heroic raid | ~305 | Hero | Myth 1/6 (318) |
Mythic raid | ~318 | Myth | Myth 6/6 (328) |
Nymrissa Lair (World) | 279 | Veteran 1/6 | Counts toward Raid row |
Nymrissa Lair (Heroic) | 305 | Hero 1/6 | Counts toward Raid row |
T11 Bountiful Delves | — | Hero Mistcrests | Delve row |
Ceilings: standard Myth track caps at 328 (6/6). Ascendant Venomstones push weapons, trinkets, and necklaces to roughly 334 (Myth 8). Very Rare drops from the final two Mythic raid bosses reach the top of the range.
Blizzard raised Season 2 rewards by an additional 7 item levels late in PTR testing, and community trackers have listed the ceiling at both 337 and 344 depending on when they were updated. Verify current values in-game.
Phase 1: Fresh 90 or Neglected Alt (Below ~286)

The threshold that matters: ilvl 286. Below this, you will struggle to get invited to group content. Pug leaders filter aggressively in the first weeks of a season, and you don't want to be the applicant they skip.
The fastest route out of this phase:
1. Field Accolade catch-up gear. If you banked Field Accolades in Season 1, they convert into Season 2 catch-up gear at veteran vendors. This is free item level requiring no content — spend them immediately on your lowest slots.
2. Complete the Curse of Ula'tek campaign. Campaign rewards give guaranteed gear with no RNG. On alts, you can skip Chapter 1 by speaking to Sidormi in the Silvermoon inn once you've completed it on one character.
3. Heroic dungeons (~286). No group requirement beyond the finder queue. Spam these until you're at the threshold.
4. Nymrissa Wavecaller on World difficulty. Solo-queueable, drops 279 gear, and critically — it counts toward the Raid row of your Great Vault. This is the only raid-row Vault credit available to a solo player. Do it every week from day one.
5. Delves. No group, no schedule, reliable output. Delves are the single most efficient catch-up lane for a player who can't reliably form groups.
Target for this phase: 292–295. At that point you can queue M+2 and stop doing catch-up content entirely.
Phase 2: M+ and Normal Raid Ready (286 → 305)

Now you're in the actual gearing loop. Three activities, run in parallel.
Mythic 0 Altar of Fangs (292) — no keystone required, drops Champion 1/6. Run it on reset.
M+2 through M+7. Start at +2 and climb as your gear allows. The important detail: M+4 is where Hero Mistcrests start dropping. Below +4, you're earning Champion crests you'll stop needing quickly. There's no reason to run +2 or +3 beyond learning the dungeons.
Normal Venomous Abyss (292). Direct drops match Mythic 0, but the Vault slot is Hero 1/6 — a full track higher. Worth clearing for the Vault credit alone.
Tier set pieces are the priority. Set bonuses outperform raw item level, particularly at the four-piece threshold. Target the five tier bosses in Venomous Abyss (bosses 2 through 6) and use the Catalyst to fill gaps.
Target for this phase: 305 (Hero 1/6). This is Heroic raid entry gear.
Phase 3: The Heroic Loop (305 → 318)

This is where most of the season is spent, and where the highest-leverage decisions live.
Heroic Venomous Abyss Is the Best Weekly Activity in the Game
Heroic raid Great Vault rewards start on the Myth track (318, Myth 1/6). That's the same track as a Mythic raid drop, from Heroic content.
It gets better: bonus rolls drop at Great Vault item level, not boss item level. A Nebulous Voidcore spent on a Heroic boss gives you Myth 1/6 gear. Not Hero — Myth.
This makes Heroic worth clearing every single week, even for guilds progressing Mythic. It's not filler content — it's a Myth-track faucet.
M+10 Is the Efficiency Sweet Spot
Two breakpoints matter in Mythic+:
+9 — Myth Mistcrests start dropping here. Not +10. If you're farming crest currency and struggling to time +10s, +9 gives the same crest with a more forgiving timer.
+10 — Great Vault jumps to Myth 1/6 (318), bonus rolls give 318, and dungeon teleports unlock.
The ceiling nobody mentions: end-of-dungeon loot caps at 311 (Hero 3/6) from +10 onward. A +15 drops exactly the same item level as a +10. What scales above +10 is your rating and nothing else.
Practical consequence: if you're gearing rather than pushing rating, +10 is the target and there's no reason to go higher. Higher keys cost more time and carry more failure risk for identical loot.
Fill All Three Vault Rows
Row | Requirement | Best Reward |
|---|---|---|
Dungeon | 8 timed M+ runs | Myth 1/6 at +10 |
Raid | 2/4/6 boss kills | Myth 1/6 at Heroic |
Delve | T11 Bountiful Delves | Hero track |
Eight timed M+ runs fills the dungeon row completely. Two, four, and six raid boss kills unlock the three raid options — and Nymrissa Wavecaller counts toward the raid row, which is the cheapest raid credit in the game.
Target for this phase: 318 across most slots.
Phase 4: Mythic Raid Ready (318 → 328+)
Mythic raid realistically wants ilvl 325+ on most specs. From a fresh 90, expect 4–6 weeks depending on time invested and RNG.
At this stage the loop is:
Heroic clear every week for Myth-track Vault slots
M+10 keys for the dungeon row and Myth Mistcrests
Mythic raid progression for direct Myth-track drops
Bonus rolls on tier bosses and weapons
Ascendant Venomstones arrive later in the season. Ten stones push a fully upgraded weapon, trinket, or necklace to roughly Myth 8 (~334). Don't spend these early — the item must already be fully upgraded, and applying stones to a piece you replace two weeks later is ten stones gone.
Mistcrest Budgeting — The 100/Week Cap Changes Everything

Season 2 restored the weekly crest cap that late Season 1 removed.
Flat cost: 20 Mistcrests per rank, six ranks per item = 120 crests for a full 6/6 upgrade
Weekly cap: 100 Mistcrests
A scaling-cost variant appeared briefly on the 12.1 PTR (10/20/30/40/50 = 150 per track). Blizzard called it a bug and reverted it after community pushback. The flat system is confirmed live.
What the cap means practically: you cannot bank a weekend of grinding into one gear push. You get roughly 5 ranks of upgrades per week, which is less than one full item track. Every crest you spend on a piece you'll replace is a rank you don't get on something permanent.
Spending priority:
Weapons first. Largest per-slot item level impact by a wide margin.
Tier pieces you'll keep all season. Set bonuses make these permanent.
Your two lowest item level slots. Fill holes before topping up strengths.
Trinkets — but only after checking sims. Trinket value swings wildly by spec.
Don't upgrade: anything more than ~10 ilvl behind your best-in-slot, LFR gear once you're raiding Heroic, or any piece you expect to replace within two weeks.
The Optimal Weekly Routine
Reset day:
Collect Great Vault — take the item, not the Voidcore (see below)
Mythic 0 Altar of Fangs
Nymrissa Wavecaller — cheapest raid-row Vault credit available
T11 Bountiful Delves (4×)
Mid-week:
Heroic Venomous Abyss clear — Myth-track Vault slot, Myth 1/6 bonus rolls
Push toward 8 timed M+ runs at +10 or your highest reliable level
Spend bonus rolls on tier bosses and weapon drops only
End of week:
Verify all three Vault rows are filled
Spend your 100 Mistcrests before reset — unspent crests are wasted weeks
Check whether any slot is now 10+ ilvl behind and plan next week around it
When to Take the Voidcore Instead of a Vault Item

This is the mistake that costs the most item level in the first month.
Early season: always take the Vault item. Almost everything is an upgrade in weeks 1–4. Taking a Voidcore instead means passing on guaranteed item level to gamble on a roll later.
Take the Voidcore when all three Vault options are pieces you already own at equal or higher item level. That's typically mid-to-late season once your gear consolidates.
Simple test: if any option is a slot upgrade, take the item. If all three are duplicates, take the Voidcore.
Common Mistakes That Cost You Weeks
Skipping Heroic raid because you're in Mythic progression. Heroic Vault slots are Myth-track and Heroic bonus rolls are Myth 1/6. This is not optional content.
Pushing keys above +10 to gear faster. End-of-dungeon loot is identical at +10 and +15. You're spending extra time and risk for zero additional item level.
Running +2 and +3 keys for crests. Champion Mistcrests become useless fast. Start at +4 minimum once you're geared for it.
Not spending your Mistcrest cap. 100 per week is use-it-or-lose-it. An unspent week is roughly 5 ranks of item level you never get back.
Upgrading gear you'll replace. The single biggest crest waste. If a piece is more than 10 ilvl behind your BiS or came from LFR, leave it alone.
Ignoring Nymrissa Wavecaller. It's a queueable raid-row Vault credit. Solo players in particular have no other access to that row.
Missing the tier set. Four-piece bonuses often change rotation priority entirely. Item level upgrades that break your set are usually a downgrade in practice.
Realistic Timelines
Starting Point | Raid-Ready (305) | Heroic Farm (318) | Mythic-Ready (325+) |
|---|---|---|---|
Season 1 main | Week 1 | Week 2–3 | Week 4–5 |
Fresh 90 | Week 2 | Week 4 | Week 6+ |
Neglected alt | Week 1–2 | Week 3–4 | Week 5–6 |
Alts gear faster than mains did in week one — catch-up mechanics compound as the season progresses. If you're gearing a second character in month two, expect roughly half the time it took your main.
Priority Cheat Sheet
If you can only do one thing per week: clear Heroic Venomous Abyss. Myth-track Vault slot plus Myth 1/6 bonus rolls beats every other single activity.
If you can do two: add eight timed M+ runs at +10.
If you can do three: add T11 Bountiful Delves for the third Vault row and passive crest income.
Always: spend your full 100 Mistcrests before reset, on weapons and tier pieces first.
